Dear Dr. Dixon,

A Japanese friend told me that in Japan there have been instances of college students, at a club initiation-related event, of drinking an entire container of soy sauce, with the result being accidental death.  Is it possible to die by an excess of sodium ingested in a short period of time?
Thank you,
Michael

Absolutely! Even with young normal kidneys an excess of sodium can kill. With just a little abnormality of kidney function, less sodium can kill. I even had a patient once who died of peanut butter. Not from the fat, from the sodium. Someone told her that she would need a about three pounds daily for this special diet, and she did and then she didn't. Moderation in all things.
