Dear Dr. Dixon,

I'm interested in purchasing a home fitness machine, such as the BowFlex.  It looks good, but what do you think?  Is there a strength building apparatus that you think is better?  Thank you!

I forgot to mention that I already have a Nordic Track, and I have lost motivation for it.  Is it still a good thing?   From your videos, I surmise you do think so.  Would you recommend keeping the Nordic Track and also getting a weight machine?  When I worked out at Gold's gym last year on the Nautilus equipment, I felt better than I have in decades.  I'll be 50 this
year and want to gain strength, prevent bone loss and lose about 20#.
Thanks, Again! :)

Susan

Susan,

I think the BowFlex is an excellent machine for strengthening.  If you can rent or use one at a club for a week or so you can determine if the manipulations will let you stay friends with it.  Bowflex is different than weight machines but no fewer manipulations are needed. Have you tried to liven up your NordicTrack with one of our videos??  It is probably the finest and most efficiently caloric consuming of all exercising as well as working arms, legs and cardio-pulmonary system. It sounds as if you thrive on the group action which you found at Golds?  If that works best for you consider doing it every third month at least for a change of place and pace. Thanks for asking such good questions.

George Dixon MD
