Dear Dr. Dixon,

When I work out at the gym whether it be weight training or cardio I perspire but not like some people I see at the gym who are dripping wet. Is there something I am doing wrong? I definitely feel warm and clammy and wet around the neck but not excessive. I know I am pushing myself, it's not like I'm not trying hard enough.

Kim

Dear Kim,

I think you may in better shape than you think. However, sweating is as variable and personal as fingerprints. Some people only sweat on their left sides, some just sweat on their hands! I can only suggest that you might take your temperature toward the end of a hard workout and see if it is very much out of normal 98.6, say, up to 102. If so, your temperature control mechanism is out of whack and you will need to compensate by dousing yourself with water (ie, artificial sweat) during your workouts. A high temperature is really only dangerous to babies in utero, but during the first weeks can cause real problems with that baby.

Thanks for a thoughtful question.
