Dear Dr. Dixon,

Hello. I am going to have my first child by cesarean section on Aug 31.  After I get my ok from my doctor I would like to get on a strict exercise routine (and diet), centered around jogging.  I have gained about 55lbs this pregnancy and need to get it off as fast as possible (but healthy).  I do not mind a lot of hard work. What would you recommend for a weekly workout routine? I was told that the abdominal area is very difficult to get back after a cesarean. Do you know any specific exercises that would help me get my stomach back into shape?  Should I just work on it every day??  Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Samantha

Dear Samantha,

I, as I am sure you have done, visited a number of sites and found the consistent message that there is no one answer. You will have to press your doctor about timing and then ask about for a physical therapist that will teach you safe exercises as soon as you are ready. I doubt if it will be much before 4-6 weeks for any abdominal work, perhaps sooner for a very gradual walking plan.  There are no exercise timetables after a C-section, but they would be about the same as for any major surgery requiring an incision. These timetables are taught to surgeons during training and are approximate - depending upon condition of the patient before and after surgery, weight and other factors.

Thanks for a great question, please be careful. Hope your baby and you are fine.
