Dear Dr. Dixon,

I tore my pec and ruptured my biceps about a year and a half ago. I went to the DR's office and he did not do an MRI and stated that it did not tear from the tendon and that in time it would heal back together. I sometimes get some pain when I lift or lift something with weight It feels like I keep tearing my pec. The DR said that if they were to do surgery that it would be like sewing two mop heads together and that the recovery time would be two or more years. Is it to late to have that surgery?

Dear Jose,

If your doctor was an Orthopaedic Surgeon skilled in sporting injuries, it does sound as if you got the right information. Even if he or she wasn't, it is pretty late to consider surgical repair. You might check back with your doctor and see if there are some specific exercises you can do to strengthen the permanently scarred muscle. The tear scarred it, no surgery would have caused less scar. The only repairs that are reasonably successful in my hands have been those of the tendon.

George Dixon MD
