Dear Dr. Dixon,

I read your response to "Janet's" question about burning feet. Actually, I had guessed that the swelling and circulatory demand were at least part of the problem. My feet burn only on the soles after about 30 minutes of step aerobics. After 4 years or more of "step," it began last summer and has become regular now. I have also developed diagnosed plantar fasciaitis. Is it reasonable to suspect that the two are related?

Charles

Dear Charles,

Yes certainly, it is reasonable to suspect a relationship but none has been shown so far. Plantar fasciaitis is a problem of degenerating tissue, other examples are tennis elbow and rotator cuff tears at the shoulder. There are good conservative treatments for plantar fasciitis which are 75 to 80 percent successful. A new impact type treatment which requires anesthesia but no cutting seems to be helpful for the stubborn cases. See your orthopaedist or podiatrist.
