Dear Dr. Dixon,

I have been diagnosed with degenerative disc disease of the lower back. I am controlling the pain with injections and now need to "rebuild" my body as I have gained 50 lbs. The weight gain is partially due to back pain, but also from over-eating. I am determined to get fit again, lose weight, and manage my pain with exercise. I just don't know where to begin with all the diets and exercise equipment out there. I do walk 20 minutes a day, but that is not NEARLY enough. I am 45 years old. Can you help me know where to start?

Brenda

Dear Brenda,

There certainly are a number of exercises which will likely help. You have chosen the safest one, walking, and you need only to increase the time spent doing it. I think you should discuss with the doctor who made the diagnosis as he or she will know the severity of your problem. Then you need to have them refer you to an older Physical Therapist to learn which safe exercises to perform. Do not be your own physical therapist, even if it costs money to be advised. Many books, including "Exercise a la Carte" can help with the weight reduction. Perhaps Weight Watchers would be helpful to get a plan into your head.
