Dear Dr. Dixon,

I am wondering if the elliptical trainer will increase muscle mass in my quads & calves, when I have used the machine in the past I felt a definite burn in the quad area (I already have bulky & muscular legs). THANKS!

Dear Joan,

Yes, you are perceptive and the elliptical trainer will do what you are afraid of. One way to lessen it is to learn to use it standing backwards which will focus on the gluteals. Consider concentrating of upper extremity work and using swimming for aerobic workouts.
